On 10th March, I had the opportunity to return to my alma mater, Cardiff University, with the honour of presenting at their Spring Careers Fair. As two of many Rubicon alumni of the university, Anna and I jumped at this opportunity.
I spent four years at Cardiff University, graduating in 2022 with a BA in Archaeology and Ancient History, and again in 2023 with an MSc in Archaeological Science. I had an incredible experience over my time at the university and completely fell in love with the city. Since then, I have had the privilege of remaining at Cardiff whilst working at Rubicon’s Welsh office.
When we arrived at the university’s Centre for Student Life, we were welcomed with open arms and a cuppa. Being back in the building where we studied for our exams might sound daunting – but knowing we were going to speak to so many passionate students about their future pathways we were ecstatic.
We were able to speak with so many up-and-coming archaeologists, conservators, and historians – as well as heritage loving students of all disciplines. Sharing all that goes on at Rubicon Archaeology in fieldwork, post-excavation, archiving, consultancy, and more – people were amazed at the breadth of archaeological careers right on their doorstep in Cardiff.
Chatting with final-years and postgrads, they were over the moon to learn that there is a bustling commercial archaeology company just a 20-minute drive away. Showing students the incredible local work Rubicon have carried out at sites like Five Mile Lane, we shared stories of our passion for Welsh heritage and the impressive archaeology in Cardiff and the surrounding area.
