The Project
SuedLink forms a key part of Germany’s plans to obtain power from wholly renewable sources by 2030 by 2035 and is a new underground cable connection to transport wind power from northern Germany to Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. At a length of 700 kilometres, SuedLink will be the largest transmission cable in the network and the longest underground power cable in the world.
Rubicon Archäologie has been appointed, with its partners in Infra Europe JV, to deliver the full range of archaeological fieldwork and post-excavation services for the project across 462km of the route and more than 2000 known sites across southern Germany from Lower Saxony to Bavaria, running from autumn 2023 through to 2028.
Senior Grabungsleitung (Senior Excavation Manager)
You would primarily be responsible for the archaeological strategy, management and overall evaluation of several smaller/one larger sites, including the dating and identification of all types of finds (not including human remains), except where specified separately by specialists.

Junior Grabungsleitung/Team Leader (Excavation Manager)
You would primarily be responsible for carrying out the archaeological excavation work, monitoring the team, the logistics and machine watching.

Grabungstechniker (Technicians)
We are looking for individuals to carry out archaeological fieldwork with at least three months commercial archaeology experience.
You will be involved in all activities that arise during an archaeological excavation, its documentation and processing. This includes, for example, addressing and describing features, surveying, drawing, photography, but also the creation of plans and profiles as well as the uncovering of features and the management of finds. Depending on the project situation, the work may also include the independent supervision of archaeological topsoil excavations and their documentation (form, photos, diary, etc.).
They will also be entrusted with assisting the excavation manager, in particular with the organisation of the excavation, the excavation personnel and the excavation-specific procedures. As part of the post-excavation work, the job includes all processing of the raw data from the field (e.g. drawing up survey plans, lists of finds or photographs) and, in consultation with the respective excavation manager, support with scientific research and writing the respective reports. Finds management and addressing finds are also part of the job.

- Minimum of 36 months experience in large infrastructure projects
- Experience leading and managing teams
- Excellent communication skills
- Great leadership and people skills
- Is flexible and reliable
- Hold an MA/MSc as a minimum
- Certified German skills will be required
- Experience working in Bavaria is preferable but not essential
Junior Grabungsleitung/Team Leader (Excavation Manager)
You would primarily be responsible for carrying out the archaeological excavation work, monitoring the team, the logistics and machine watching.
Potential candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:
- Minimum of 9 motnhs of comparable experience and hold a BA or equivalent as a minimum
- Excavation degree is acceptable with 18 months experience
- Is punctual and reliable
- Can work as part of a team
- Skilled in leading a team if needed
- Certified German skills will be required
- Experience working in Bavaria is preferable but not essential

Grabungsleitung (Excavation Manager)
You would primarily be responsible for the archaeological strategy, management and overall evaluation of sites, including the dating and identification of all types of finds (not including human remains), except where specified separately by specialists.
Potential candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:
- Minimum of 12 months experience of infrastructure projects
- Hold an MA/MSc as a minimum
- Certified German skills will be required
- Have great leadership qualities
- Is punctual and
- Be driven and innovative
- Excellent communications skills
- Experience working in Bavaria is preferable but not essential
Grabungsfacharbeiter
You will be involved in all excavation-related activities that arise during an archaeological excavation, its documentation and processing.
Potential candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:
- Good documentation skills
- Good Processing skills such as washing, labelling, packing as well as auxiliary documentation work such as creating or typing list, feature books, labels etc.
- Is organised
- Can work in a team
- Is punctual and reliable
